How to choose the right one
Espresso machine or pods?
Manual espresso machines give better coffee for less per cup, but you need a grinder or good fresh ground coffee. Pod machines are simpler and faster but cost more per cup.
Upgrade path
A budget espresso machine plus a good burr grinder can make better espresso than some machines costing twice as much.
Beans, grind and water
With an espresso machine, coffee quality depends mostly on beans and grinding. Buy freshly roasted beans from a UK roaster or supermarket speciality range, and grind just before brewing if you can. Use filtered water in hard-water areas: it improves taste and protects the boiler. Clean the steam wand after every use so milk does not bake on.
Upgrade path
If you later want better espresso, adding a burr grinder will improve results more than buying a pricier machine. Many people start with a Dedica or Stilosa and upgrade the grinder first.
Cleaning routine
Rinse the portafilter and wipe the steam wand after each use, empty the drip tray daily, and descale every one to three months depending on your water hardness. A clean machine makes noticeably better coffee and lasts longer.
