How to choose the right one

Pressure vs flow

Pressure (bar) loosens dirt; flow (litres per hour) rinses it away. Higher flow cleans patios faster.

Patio cleaners

Rotary patio cleaner attachments reduce splashback and give even results.

How to clean a patio safely

Sweep first, then wet the area. Use a patio cleaner attachment or a wide fan nozzle held at a shallow angle to avoid etching soft stone or blowing out joints. Work in sections and rinse towards a drain. Re-sand block paving joints afterwards.

Washing your car

Use a snow foam lance or detergent first, keep the nozzle at least 30 cm from the paint, and avoid aiming directly at seals, badges and stone chips. Rinse from the top down.

Storage and winter care

Drain water from the pump and hoses before winter so nothing freezes and cracks. Store indoors if possible.

Detergents

Use detergents designed for pressure washers; other cleaners can damage seals.

Electric or petrol?

Electric pressure washers suit almost every UK garden: they are lighter, quieter and need little maintenance. Petrol models are more powerful but noisy, heavy and generally only needed for large commercial jobs.

Surfaces to avoid

Do not pressure wash roof tiles, soft render, old brickwork, delicate garden furniture or windows at close range – the jet can damage surfaces and seals. Test a small hidden area first on any stone or timber, and keep the lance moving to avoid lines. On decking, follow the direction of the boards and use a lower pressure setting to avoid lifting fibres from the wood. Let surfaces dry fully before applying any sealant or stain.

Buying tips for UK shoppers

Check for hosepipe bans in summer – many UK water companies restrict domestic pressure washer use during bans.
